This collection consists of letters in and carbons of letters out, memoranda, speeches, newspaper and magazine clippings, court cases, legislative research files and reports covering the dates 1956 through 1968. The materials cover a variety of topics and legislation, including fair housing, civil rights, discrimination in civil service and the Detroit riot of 1967.

James Del Rio was born on Jan. 30, 1924, in Detroit, Mich. He attended the University of Michigan and the Detroit College of Law. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Union Baptist Seminary, Birmingham, Ala. He is a former mortgage broker, real estate broker and insurance executive, a trustee of the New Bethel Church. He was named Michigan Industrial Ambassador by Gov.
